Volunteers Needed to Chaperone Middle School Bike Rides

This spring and fall, Phy Ed teachers at Spring Harbor, Jefferson, Toki, and Whitehorse Middle Schools will be doing something new: teaching safe bicycling to their students.  The Phy Ed teachers will need help chaperoning the students during the “on-street” bike ride on the final day of the bike unit.  The Madison school district needs volunteers who are available once or twice a month in May, June, September and October.

Volunteer Qualifications

The district is looking for volunteers who have skills in at least one of the following areas:

1) How to ride in traffic, and awareness of local and state cycling laws

2) Working with adolescents

3) How to fix a dropped chain, repair a flat, or make basic adjustments to a bicycle.

Volunteers will need to be available for most of the morning or afternoon on the days they volunteer to help chaperone the final on-street (or on-trail) bike field trips.  Volunteers must also complete MMSD’s criminal background check.
